You will find 3 fundamental type of weapons: one-handed weapons which is often wielded with a single hand, two-handed weapons which need two hands, and ranged weapons which also need two hands. You may also occasionally run into wow items labeled off hand without the need of a weapon kind. These is usually anything from cosmetic wow items, such as flowers, to wow items that buff stats for classes that can't dual wield but can use one-handed weapons.
The AH is the perfect spot to pick up new and superior gear, but you should remember that the AHs for the Horde and Alliance are in Orgrimmar and Ironforge respectively.
You'll also find weapons labeled main hand or off hand, which means that they can only be wielded in your main hand or off hand -- which comes into play with classes that could wield a different weapon in each hand. These wow items are commonly equippable by any class in their off-hand slot. While they aren't fairly weapons, shields are viewed as off-hand wow items also.
